Darren Hayes took America by storm with hits like “Truly, Madly, Deeply” and “I Knew I Loved You,” in the late '90s as one-half of the duo Savage Garden. In the new millennium, Hayes has seen a successful solo career that will bring him back into the realm of pop next year. We caught up with the soft-spoken Brit and 2006 Out 100 honoree to chat about the development of his sound, his coming out, and the cause he’s most passionate about right now.

Out: Tell us about your new record.
Darren Hayes: Well, first of all, it’s way too early to even talk about it [laughs]. But it’s finished. It’s coming out next year. So I’ve spent three years working on the album. I haven’t released any of the details in terms of the title or any of that stuff. But I have a YouTube video of the making of it.

How is it going to be different from what we’ve heard from you in the past?
Well, it’s interesting. I can only tell you what other people have said about it. It’s a pop record, and I don’t know that I’ve ever made a pop record really since my first solo album, Spin. I’ve had two really wonderful experimentations, I would call them. My last two records were two of the favorite things I’ve ever done in my life. But they were absolute deviations from the path. The first was a record called The Tension and the Spark. It was pretty dark, to say the least. Critically praised, but commercially perhaps a little confusing [laughs]. Then the last record that I did was the first time I ever did a record independently. I think I had a bit of a chip on my shoulder, in a good way. I had just come out publicly and I had just gotten married to my partner, so I felt like I was in a very celebratory phase, where I just didn’t want to take no for an answer. I broke all the commercial rules. I made a double album when no one was even selling records. I went on tour with a stage production that was probably too extravagant and too expensive for the amount of records I was selling. It was a really fun period for me. But I wasn’t really thinking about that being played on the radio or any of that stuff. It’s taken me three years to make this record, and this record is me kind of rolling up my sleeves as a songwriter and really saying "I’ve been associated with some really successful pop music in the past, and maybe I’ve been a little hard on myself." This record is just me being comfortable in my own skin.

DARREN HAYES RECORDS HIS OWN UNIQUE VERSION OF A TIM FINN CLASSIC
FOR FINN BROTHERS TRIBUTE ALBUM 'HE WILL HAVE HIS WAY'

Darren Hayes has recorded his own unique interpretation of Tim Finn's extraordinary song 'Not Even Close' for a tribute album of artists covering the songs of Neil and Tim Finn titled 'He Will Have His Way' to be released in Australia on November 12.

He Will Have His Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn brings together a diverse collective of talent from Australia and the Finn brothers’ homeland of New Zealand to honour and celebrate these songwriting greats. Musical legends such as Paul Kelly, Jimmy Barnes, Paul Dempsey, Darren Hayes, Chris Cheney, former members of Midnight Oil [in their new band The Break] and Empire Of The Sun’s Luke Steele [here fronting his original outfit, The Sleepy Jackson] share the stage with popular contemporaries and newcomers such as Sydney acts Boy & Bear, Art Vs Science, Philadelphia Grand Jury and Angus Stone [of Angus & Julia Stone]; Melbourne artists Dan Sultan and Oh Mercy; Queenslanders Busby Marou; and New Zealand’s Artisan Guns and Kody Nielson.
Each artist brings their unique musical perspective to reinterpreting a Finn classic, along with the odd hidden gem from the brothers’ extraordinary catalogue.
Darren said

"Like most Australians my age I've grown up with the music of the Finn brothers being the soundtrack to my life whether I was aware of it or not. From Split Enz to Crowded House and then Neil and Tim's solo projects the music was and remains a constant in Australian life.
So much so that my mind associates the music as being uniquely Australian though actually from New Zealand. Claiming the music as my own has often led to fierce debates with Kiwis but one fact remains - it is music that reminds me of home. When I was asked to record Tim's incredible song 'Not Even Close' I was of course daunted. How do you face off against your peer and do it justice? The truth is I didn't have to. The song wrapped itself around me in my tiny London recording studio and I found myself singing the words as though I'd written them myself. The instant I lay down the harmonies I felt as though I were a Finn brother. There is something in the DNA of the songwriting - perhaps the intervals between the notes that is instantly recognisably 'Finn'. And I was instantly homesick. It's a tremendous, layered and heavy monster of a song and I'm honoured to have been given the rare treat of recording my own tribute."

HE WILL HAVE HIS WAY: THE SONGS OF TIM & NEIL FINN
THE SEQUEL TO THE MULTI-PLATINUM ‘SHE WILL HAVE HER WAY’

Following on from the massive success of 2005’s She Will Have Her Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn, now it’s the men’s turn to come out to play and pay homage to the glory of the brothers Finn.

He Will Have His Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn is the male sequel to the critically-hailed female-voiced album She Will Have Her Way, which was released in October 2005 and went on to Triple Platinum sales in Australia and Double Platinum sales in New Zealand. All up, She Will Have Her Way is now nudging 300,000 sales, received ARIA nominations and unanimous critical praise.

Like its popular predecessor, He Will Have His Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn brings together a diverse collective of talent from Australia and the Finn brothers’ homeland of New Zealand to honour and celebrate these songwriting greats.

Some have come to respectfully bow down to the originals, not wanting to mess with perfection. Others have come to reinvent. Whatever their approach, the 16 acts on He Will Have His Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn have brought their own strong personality and voice to the universally acclaimed songs of Tim and Neil Finn.

Among the rare musical moments presented on He Will Have His Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn, The Living End’s Chris Cheney makes a rare solo appearance, delivering an edgy take on “Distant Sun”, backed only by his electric guitar; Paul Kelly joins forces with Angus Stone to offer a most delicate duet of “Four Seasons in One Day”; while the hypnotic Dan Sultan fronts the normally instrumental surf outfit The Break for an appropriately swampy take on “Shark Attack”.

Elsewhere, Jimmy Barnes rocks up “Message To My Girl”, Darren Hayes croons “Not Even Close”, Art Vs Science goes psycho on “I See Red”, while Glenn Richards of Augie March has a party all on his own with his surprising choice of “She Got Body, She Got Soul” [Tim Finn’s showstopper from the soundtrack of the classic 1982 Aussie film Star Struck and the Split Enz album Frenzy].

Nowhere is the spectrum of the varying musical approaches more evident than in the two versions presented here of the Crowded House ballad, “Better Be Home Soon”. While Busby Marou tackle the song with a very traditional approach, accenting the track’s Irish folk roots, Luke Steele’s The Sleepy Jackson delivers an unexpectedly bent electronic interpretation of the same song.

As both Luke Steele and Darren Hayes point out in the new album's liner notes, there is something special in the Finns’ DNA. Whatever it is, it has got under the skin of literally millions of people right around the world, especially in Australia and New Zealand, making a very deep and real connection now spanning four decades.

The Finns' music continues to affect people from all generations. This was evidenced on She Will Have Her Way and is what primarily led Executive Producers John O’Donnell and Craig Hawker to decide to re-visit and re-engineer the concept with a male skew.

From the cerebral to the surreal, the delicate to the chaotic, the jovial to the soulfully tortured, the artistry of the Finn brothers’ work shines through in each of these 16 re-imagined versions of classic cuts from their incomparable song catalogue, all recorded exclusively for inclusion on He Will Have His Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn.
